About the neighborhood

Portland’s upscale West End, a leafy, residential neighborhood, is known for its grand brick homes, trendy local restaurants, and the sprawling Western Promenade, with views of the nearby Fore River and–on a good day–even far-off Mount Washington. Small parks and community gardens dot the neighborhood. Heading toward Portland’s Old Port, the busy shopping district that straddles the city’s working wharf, you’ll find Victoria Mansion, an 1800s Italianate home offering seasonal tours of its lavish interior. Nearby, trendy restaurants and popular bars cluster around Longfellow Square.

Noted for its architecture, history, and vibe, the West End is a popular destination for tourists and locals, and was called in 2010 “one of the best preserved Victorian neighborhoods in the country” by the Minneapolis StarTribune. Historic buildings include 68 High Street, The Gothic House, Brown House, Butler House, and Morrill Mansion.

The West End has long been known for ethnic and socioeconomic diversity, noted for its inclusivity and open-mindedness by the Portland Press Herald as early as the 1990s.

The neighborhood has been home to numerous well-known Portlanders including two noted architects, Francis H. Fassett and John Calvin Stevens. The latter was a major contributor to the Colonial Revival style and the former, through his work in the Victorian High Gothic and Queen Anne styles, greatly influenced the look of modern-day Portland.
